GEO vs SEO

Not a replacement. More like upstream and downstream.

The two get treated as competitors, usually by someone selling one of them. In practice they share most of their foundations — crawlability, content quality, structured data — and diverge on what the finished work produces.

SEO produces a position: your page appears in a list, the user decides whether to click. GEO produces a mention: the model has already decided, and your name either is or is not in the sentence it wrote.

Side by side

Where they actually differ.

SEO GEO
What is optimised A page All the evidence about a brand, wherever it lives
What you compete for A position in a list A sentence in the answer
How results are measured Rank, impressions, clicks Mention rate across a frozen question set
Position stability Discrete and observable — you are 3rd or you are not No stable position exists; answers vary per run
Where the traffic goes To your page Often nowhere — the user acts on the answer
Role of third-party sources Mostly as links As the material the answer is built from
Effect of inconsistent facts Minor Significant — confidence in the entity drops
Time to effect Weeks to months Days on web-searching platforms; release cycles on others

When to pick SEO

  • Your customers still compare options by opening several tabs — common in categories with heavy visual or price comparison.
  • You need measurable traffic to a specific page, for example to run a conversion test on it.
  • Your site has never been indexed properly. This is prerequisite work for both, and it is SEO work.

When to pick GEO

  • Your customers ask an assistant before they search — increasingly the default in considered purchases.
  • Your category is one where the answer names two or three providers and the rest are invisible.
  • Brand-name searches and inbound calls are steady or rising while site traffic falls. That pattern usually means the path shortened.
FAQ

Questions teams ask before they start

Do I have to choose?

No, and the framing is usually a sales device. Crawlability, content quality and structured data serve both. The question worth asking is where the marginal budget goes, and that depends on whether your customers still click through lists or act on answers.

Does good SEO automatically produce good GEO?

It helps and it is not sufficient. Ranking means a page is findable; being named means a model found material that answers the question. Pages built for a keyword often do not answer the question a person actually asks, and models also need to see the same facts from sources other than you.

Which budget should this come out of?

In practice it comes out of the same line as content and SEO, because it uses the same underlying work. Where it is set up as a separate budget with a separate owner, the two sides usually end up changing the same pages twice.

Does GEO work reduce our search traffic?

No. The material is published rather than removed, and indexed pages remain indexed. What reduces click traffic is the change in user behaviour, which happens whether or not you do this work.

Can the same page serve both?

Usually yes, with one change: write it to answer a complete question rather than to target a keyword. A page that answers fully still ranks; a page written for a keyword often does not answer what was actually asked.

How do we report the two together?

Separately, with their own metrics. Rank, impressions and clicks on one side; mention rate, share of voice and source coverage on the other. Combining them into one score hides which of the two moved.
