Definition
A canonical URL declares which address is the authoritative one for a piece of content when the same content is reachable at more than one address.
Why it matters
Getting it wrong splits signals between duplicate addresses. Two frequent mistakes on Chinese sites: serving both the bare domain and the www subdomain without redirecting, and pointing the canonical at an address that then redirects.
