Definition
GEO is the practice of getting a brand named, recommended and cited inside the answers that generative AI assistants produce. Unlike search optimization, which competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes for a sentence inside the answer itself.
Why it matters
When a model answers "which provider is best", it typically names two or three. A brand that is not among them is not ranked low — it is absent from the decision entirely.
How it is used
GEO work has three parts: make the brand machine-readable, put accurate material where models look, and measure a fixed question set repeatedly so changes are comparable.
